Understanding God: He is A Creator

In the beginning God created…

– Genesis 1:1

It is instructive that “create” is the first word associated with God as we become acquainted with Him in the Bible. That word also sums up His personality and underscores one of His main attributes. He is a Creator. This is not to be interpreted loosely, particularly in the light of our contemporary use of the word. God is the ultimate Creator, as He created all things, even the ends of the earth (Isaiah 40:28).

Another word copiously used to describe God in the Bible is “the Maker.” He is the Maker of all things (Jeremiah 10:16, Jeremiah 51:19). He created both male and female, the high and the low, the big and the small, the mighty and the minnow, the poor and the rich (Jeremiah 51:19); He created the heavens, the earth and everything in them (Isaiah 51:13).

This therefore leaves us with two lessons as takeaway from this meditation. Firstly, out of everything that God created, it was humans that He decided to make in His own similitude, to think, speak, act, and function just like Him. By extension, that means every human has the creative ability of God.

If you stretch your imagination to consider the magnitude of creation, you would appreciate the kind of power with which God has endowed humans. We are wired to be creators just like Him. Little wonder that after God created all things in their natural state, humans, His co-creators, are entrusted with recreation, which has led to the discovery and invention of all manners of things. This is merely humans exercising the power of agency that God conferred on them at creation when He created them in His own image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-27).

The second lesson to take away is that it is important to go about our creative power in synch with God. Inasmuch as there are many good human-made creations that have graced the earth across the ages, there are also some man-made creations that God would not approve of, particularly to the extent that such defaces or deforms His original design and other fundamentals. In this regard, wisdom is profitable to direct.

That said, it is heartwarming to see how humans have evolved and come up with the beautiful innovations and developments we have around today which are not just helping us to understand our world and environments better but also helping us to live a more fulfilling and comfortable life. The power of creation.

God of Foresight

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. – Genesis 1:27

Foresight is another attribute of God that we will reflect on today. Upon deciding to create humans in His image and likeness, He also knew that He must factor in the ability to reproduce after their kinds in them; hence, His creating them male and female.

There has been much debate about the origin of humans, where from and how we originated as well as how humans were able to procreate if it was only the family of Adam and Eve that were the first set of humans. This piece is not about to join that debate or attempt to throw any light on it. Our focus today is only on the depth of thinking of God which accounted for how He factored gender into the equation when He was creating humans and other mammals.

With foresight, God knew that even though He was making creatures that would need to reproduce themselves, that would have been impossible if He did not embed a reproductive system in them which would help them to procreate and fulfill His design for them to be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth.

With foresight, God also knew that without this reproductive system in humans and other mammals, He would need to be creating them over and over again in order for them to increase; whereas, with a reproductive system, it would be easy for them to produce on their own with little or no assistance.

Foresight distinguishes the output of those that think before they start something from those who do not. It also plays a large role in determining the quality and sustainability of an entity. You just need to check out the universe and the living creatures that God had made from the beginning to see the important role foresight plays in quality and sustainability. Even with adverse climate, there have been more survivors among the creatures of God than those that went extinct.

If you also consider the physical outlook of the creatures, they keep looking finer and better as against worse with the turn of the ages. That is what working with the future in mind does for you. It helps to prepare for contingencies before they arise and to have plans in place to address them without adversely affecting the operations. Our God is a God of foresight.

God is Resourceful

Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. – Genesis 1:6-7

Another attribute of God which we will meditate on today is industry. He is a very resourceful God. We had earlier dwelt on how He used the power of imagination to see what the universe could become, even when it was all formless, void and dark; and did not inspire confidence as to what it could be. God nevertheless saw the huge potential buried in that formless, void and dark mass that made Him begin to start bringing them out through the process of creation.

However, this would not have happened if God was all vision and elocution alone with no action. The Oxford Dictionary defines resourcefulness as “the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties.” Now difficulties do not get bigger than a vast universe whose observable diameter is estimated to be about 93 billion light-years. To put that in human context, a light-year is equivalent to 9 trillion kilometers or 6 trillion miles in our earthling reckoning. To be confronted with such magnitude of formlessness, voidness and darkness is as daunting as any difficulty can be.

Now you can appreciate the enormity of what God had to grapple with when He was about to start the work of creation. But beyond the eerie stretch of dark mass that greeted His eyes, He also saw the beauty that is the universe, with mind-blowing galaxies and stupendous splendor, as we know it today. This was made possible through imagination.

Then He decreed what He saw with His inner eyes into being. He did not stop there. As He was mouthing them, He was also backing His words with action by creating, making, forming, extracting, dividing, separating, labelling, evaluating, and much more as we can see in Genesis 1.

The story of creation reveals how resourceful God is. He does not just use His imagination to see what could be, or His mouth to decree what should be, He also uses His hands to work those into existence. He is a working God. He is industrious and does not rest on His oars, reveling on yesterday’s glory. He keeps working and makes everything new (Revelation 21:5; Isaiah 43:18-19).

The good news is that He has created us humans just like Him, with His same mindset, drive, abilities and temperament. The question is, what are you doing with yours?
